As we see at this time of year, the Broadway Market is a cornerstone of Buffalo’s Polonia. Thousands of shoppers visit the scores of vendors, getting their pierogi from Babcia’s and Paula, their baked goods from White Eagle, some Famous Horseradish, and meats from Lupas and Camellia.
But besides the market being a shopping destination, it has served as a business incubator where sellers big and small got their start. Redlinski's got their start at the market before relocating to Cheektowaga, Chrusciki Bakery now headquartered in Depew still maintains a market stand, and nearly a century ago Frank Galantowicz worked a butcher booth at the market before moving to 1196 Walden in Cheektowaga and opening F. Galantowicz Grocery Store and Meat Market.
Frank Galantowicz was born on March 20, 1888, in Gniezno, Poland. While growing up near Poznan, Frank learned the art of butchery. From beef to pork, Galantowicz could properly prepare a cut of meat. By the age of 15, Frank was a journeyman butcher but instead of plying his skills in Germanic Poland, he decided to set sail for America.
After working in the Midwest, Galantowicz found a home in Buffalo as the First World War was raging. Living at the Polonia Hotel, Frank found work with another Galantowicz, butcher John Galantowicz at stand number 8 in the Broadway Market.
John would be the last mentor for the 29-year-old Frank. By the time the war ended, Frank had learned all the skills and technique he could, and the now master butcher opened his own butcher shop at 243 Lovejoy.
As the area around St. John Gualbert Parish became more established, and now married to the former Charlotte Moch, Galantowicz decided to move his business to 1196 Walden in 1923. Besides selling choice cuts of meats, the store sold everything else you could need in the kitchen. Staples like flour, sugar, coffee, lard, bread, eggs, and milk were available as were fresh fruit and vegetables and at the end of prohibition even a six pack of beer.
Soon, the business, like the marriage, was fruitful. As the couple welcomed their first child, his store began taking part in “Poor Orders,” a locally run 1920s version of SNAP.
Through the Great Depression and the Second World War, Galantowicz ran his corner store even extending credit to customers when it was needed. In time Frank would see his children marry and have children of their own, all while still manning the counter at 1196. Even in his 70s, Galantowicz ran his shop.
On Tuesday, April 1, 1969, Frank Galantowicz woke up and didn’t feel well. As the morning progressed, Frank just felt worse. Finally after lunch, Galantowicz decided it was time to see his doctor. He went west down Walden, making it all the way to Bailey. While sitting at the intersection, Frank suffered an attack.
At 1:55 p.m., Buffalo Fire Squad 4 got the call and sped to Frank. They loaded him up and raced to Meyer Memorial Hospital, but there was nothing they could do. As they pulled into the hospital, Frank Galantowicz, the 81-year-old father, grandfather, Polish immigrant, Broadway Market alumni, master butcher, and entrepreneur was gone. Following his death, the F. Galantowicz Grocery Store was closed.
